DAY TRIP TO segovia FROM MADRID

Day Trip to Segovia from Madrid - Wolves Tours Madrid

Just an hour from Madrid, you can visit Segovia, another city we highly recommend alongside Toledo for a full-day trip. Rich in history, stunning architecture, and local gastronomy, Segovia is famous for its Roman aqueduct, fairytale Alcázar, and Gothic cathedral.

Whether you're interested in history, architecture, or simply want to enjoy a scenic day away from Madrid, Segovia offers it all. We always suggest visiting Segovia for a day, you won’t regret it!

Brief history of Segovia

Segovia was originally a Celtic settlement and later came under Roman control. Its most famous legacy, the Roman aqueduct, is nearly 2,000 years old and remained in use until the mid-19th century.

After the Islamic invasion of Spain, the city was likely abandoned for several centuries. It was repopulated by Christians from the north and beyond the Pyrenees after Alfonso VI conquered Toledo in 1085. Segovia flourished as a hub for wool and textile trade until the end of the 16th century, when it entered a period of decline.

The city also played a role in Spain’s broader history. In the Church of San Miguel, Isabella I was proclaimed Queen of Castile in 1474. Alongside Ferdinand II of Aragon, she completed the Reconquista, unified Spain under their son Charles V, and financed Christopher Columbus’s voyage to the New World in 1492.

What to see in Segovia

  • Roman Aqueduct: One of the best-preserved aqueducts in the world, a must-see symbol of Roman engineering.

  • Alcázar of Segovia: A fairytale castle that once served as a royal palace and fortress.

  • Segovia Cathedral: A beautiful Gothic cathedral in the heart of the city.

  • Church of San Miguel: Historic site where Isabella I was proclaimed queen.

Where to eat in Segovia

Segovia is famous for its local delicacy, cochinillo asado (roasted suckling pig). We recommend Restaurante Casa Duque, located at Calle Cervantes 12. With over 120 years of history, it has even hosted Spanish royalty.

  • Tip: Make a reservation via their website. If you don’t, try to arrive early, it’s just a short walk from the aqueduct toward the cathedral.

How to Get There

Segovia is easy to reach from Madrid, making it perfect for a day trip.

  • By Train: Depart from Chamartin station. Journey takes ~30 minutes. Return tickets start at €20. Check Renfe for schedules.
